Wood Trading [WT]

Wood trading on WoodUChoose is a live timber trading board where traders, importers, sawmills, merchants and joinery buyers post the parcels they have offered and the parcels they want. WoodUChoose does not own or sell the timber - we host the board, connect trade timber suppliers with buyers, and let you deal direct with the lister.

Parcels run from European oak, beech and Scandinavian redwood to iroko, sapele, teak and American black walnut, square sawn, un-edged (waney edge) or edged to fixed widths.

How to read a listing

Every entry carries the same fields, so you can compare like with like before you make contact:

Species and origin - origin moves colour, density and price as much as the species name does. Oak out of Latvia and oak out of France are not the same purchase.
Grade - the yield of clear, usable cuttings to expect from the parcel.
Sawing - plain (through and through), quarter or mixed sawn, which sets the figure and how the boards will move.
Broad edge - square sawn, un-edged or edged to fixed widths. Un-edged parcels look cheaper per cubic metre, but you buy the waney waste with them.
Thickness, width and quantity - in millimetres, with the volume on offer.
Price per measurement - per m3, per pack or per unit, in GBP or EUR, so you can convert each listing onto your own costing basis. For haulage and freight you also need the weight behind that volume: our sister site WoodUWeigh has a cubic metre weight calculator (opens in a new tab) by species.
Moisture content, certification and minimum order - on the listing page, with whether the parcel is collection only.

Timber grades you will see here

Grade is the commonest cause of a timber trade going wrong, because the rules differ by region:

FAS (Firsts and Seconds) and Prime - top hardwood grades, cut for long, wide, largely clear boards.
1, 3/4 and 4 Faces Clear - graded on how many faces are free of defect, common on tropical hardwoods.
No. 1 Common - shorter, narrower clear cuttings; the workhorse joinery grade.
Square Edged A to D - European square-edged grading, A the cleanest.
Unsorted and Vths - Nordic softwood grades; unsorted mixes the upper grades, fifths sits below them.

Grade names are not interchangeable between the American, European and Nordic systems, so agree in writing which rules apply and who inspects on arrival.

Posting a parcel or a wanted entry

Have this ready and you will get straight answers instead of a chain of questions: species and origin; grade and the rules you grade to; nominal thickness and width in millimetres with lengths fixed or random; volume, minimum parcel size and moisture content (fresh sawn, air dried or kiln dried); price basis, currency and incoterms; and certification - FSC, PEFC or none.
