What you can specify on a custom resin table

• Table type - coffee table or dining table / desk, rectangular or round.
• Timber species (13) - American white oak, European oak in joinery grade S/E or character grade, American black walnut, cherry, American maple, American white ash, European beech, steamed beech, Scandinavian redwood, Douglas fir, southern yellow pine and teak. Check grain, colour and hardness in the timber information database.
• Board style - waney edge with the natural edge of the tree facing the resin, all edges square, or rough-edged random boards where the resin forms the outer shape.
• Resin colour (10) - red, orange, yellow, green, light blue, dark blue, pink, purple, black or white.
• Size, metric or imperial - rectangular dining tables and desks run 1200 to 2400 mm long, 600 to 1200 mm wide, 30 to 90 mm thick and 600 to 1200 mm high. Rectangular coffee tables run 800 to 1500 mm long, 400 to 700 mm wide, 25 to 60 mm thick and 400 to 600 mm high. Round tops are set by top width alone: 300 to 700 mm for a round coffee table, and 1200, 1500, 1600, 1800, 2000 or 2400 mm for a round dining table.
• Finish - high gloss, satin or matt.
• Legs - matching timber, black coated steel box section or stainless steel box section, either as a full frame to each end or as four posts inset at the corners.

How to size a wood and resin dining table

Allow about 600 mm of table length per person. On that basis an 1800 mm top seats six in comfort and a 2400 mm top seats eight, and 900 mm of width leaves a clear run down the middle for serving dishes. Standard UK dining height is around 750 mm, and the height list steps in 100 mm, so pick 700 mm or 800 mm and tell us the exact figure you want when you send the design over. Coffee tables normally sit level with or just below the seat cushion, which is the 400 mm setting for most sofas.

Two things people forget are thickness and access. A thick top of 60 mm or more looks right on a long table but adds serious weight, and the resin adds more again. Measure your narrowest doorway, stair turn or lift before you commit, because a finished one-piece top cannot be broken down on site. If access is tight, say so with your enquiry - a maker can often build the base separately and fit it on delivery.

Waney edge, square edge or random boards

Waney edge, also called live edge, keeps the natural undulating outline of the tree on the faces that meet the resin, so the river follows the shape the timber actually grew in. That is the classic river table look. Square edge gives a straight, even resin band and a more architectural result that suits desks and boardroom tables. Random boards let the resin form the outer profile as well, for a free-form top. Each option shows a guide image in the builder as you select it, and the artist impression updates so you can see the combination before you send it.

Choosing timber and resin colour together

Pale timbers such as ash, maple, beech and Scandinavian redwood give the strongest contrast with dark blue, black or purple resin, which is why they photograph so well. Darker species such as American black walnut and cherry usually sit better with white, light blue or pink. European oak in character grade brings knots, medullary rays and colour variation, so it carries a bolder resin without looking busy, while joinery grade S/E oak is much cleaner and calmer. Every board is unique, so treat the artist impression as a guide to the layout rather than to the exact grain you will receive.
