The first named Cristoforo Colombo and the second is the Amerigo Vespucci. As the pride of the Italian Navy, Amerigo Vespucci conjures up memories of men-of-war from two centuries ago. Launched in 1931, She is the only three-decker three-masted full-rigged ship that still in use today. She is named after Amerigo Vespucci(1451-1512), third child of a well regarded family of Florence who was a merchant and explorer. His name was given to new continent during its explorations along the east coasts of South America. Riding high in the water, with triple decks indicated by painted white stripes, Amerigo Vespucci is a gracious 20th Century goodwill Ambassador, as well as a symbol of Italy’s global maritime heritage and tradition. Amerigo Vespucci’s home port is La Spezia, Italy and she has been continually active. Most of her training cruises are in European waters. In 2002, she undertook a voyage around the world. She still takes part in Tall Ship races and sailing parades where she is in amicable rivalry with the Gorch Fock. When she is berthed in port, public tours of the vessel are usually offered.
