The wood industry is no exception when it comes to leveraging artificial intelligence. From forestry and timber processing to manufacturing and construction, AI will bring many benefits while complementing human ingenuity.
Forestry and Processing Technology
In forestry, AI can analyse satellite imagery to track tree growth and identify areas in need of planting. During timber harvesting, automation and AI can improve efficiency and precision. Waste can be minimized using scanning and modelling of logs.
Sawmills will also benefit from automation of processes guided by AI. This allows optimising the breakdown of logs and cutting timber. Defect detection is another area where AI can spot knots and other flaws to cut out bad sections, using connected tooling and machinery.

Sales forecasting, and delivery logistics will all leverage AI and machine learning. This technology will filter through the entire timber supply chain.
While AI will lead to some job automation, it will also create new roles and allow human workers to focus on higher-level tasks. Workers displaced by robots can be retrained for emerging jobs. The end result will be a more efficient, sustainable, and innovative wood industry.
The advantage that our industry has over others, is that woodwork and joinery still need the craftspeople’s skills, touch and creativity with their hands. AI will work alongside these unique and incredible skills, further enhancing our ability to re-shape our built environment and use more wood (our only sustainable resource) to create a better more environmentally friendly future for our children and theirs.
