Traditional Scottish farmhouses were never built for the way we cook and live today. Solid stone walls set in lime mortar, small windows, low ceilings and a solid-fuel range that heated the room while it cooked the dinner.
Those walls were made to breathe slowly, not to soak up the steam a modern household throws out every day. If yours has started to bloom with salt and black mould, the building's reacting to your routine, not failing you. Read on to see why the damp shows up where it does, and the fixes that actually deal with it.
Run a dishwasher, a tumble dryer and an Aga day in, day out, and you push a lot of moisture into the air. In a solid stone wall, that vapour drifts in and out until it hits a cold point and turns back into water inside the structure. This is interstitial condensation, and it's why paint blows, plaster crumbles into a chalky salt bloom, and black mould creeps in behind the cabinets even when nothing is leaking from outside.
The climate makes it harder. On the west coast and across the Highlands, wind-driven rain can saturate an external wall for weeks at a time, so the stone barely gets a chance to dry before the next front rolls in. When the inside is warm and damp while the wall stays cold and wet, the two meet somewhere in the middle, and that's where you'll find the worst of the trouble.
Not every room in a farmhouse needs to look like the drawing room. Sculleries, larders, boot rooms and dog-wash corners are working spaces, and here function matters far more than period character. These are the rooms that get splashed, muddied and scrubbed daily, so a wall finish that wipes clean and shrugs off moisture earns its place.
Hygienic PVC panelling is a common choice for these zones, typically carrying a Class 1 fire rating and food-safe accreditation, which also makes it appropriate for the join between a utility area and the kitchen itself. One word of caution though. Panelling solves the daily-cleaning problem, but it doesn't cure damp underneath it. If a wall is already wet, boxing it in will only hide the issue while it quietly gets worse behind the surface.
For the main living spaces, the real answer is to manage moisture at the source instead of covering it up. A few things make the biggest difference:
Historic Environment Scotland is clear on this point. Sealed plasterboard with a vapour barrier on a solid stone wall can push the dew point into the fabric and make things worse, which is why its guidance points owners towards vapour-permeable materials on pre-1919 walls.
Sequence matters more than most people expect. Strip the wall back, let it dry, work out where the water's really coming from, and only then decide on the finish. Do it the other way round and you can seal damp inside the fabric of the house.
Damp in an old farmhouse usually means daily life has drifted from what the building was designed to handle. Sort the ventilation, respect the lime, and keep the wipeable finishes for the working rooms where they earn their keep.
If the damp's stubborn, or the house is listed or pre-1919, get it diagnosed properly before you pick any finish. Covering damp isn't the same as curing it, and the walls will always tell you which one you've done.
