Changing the exterior of a house is a much bigger design decision than changing a wall colour indoors. The material has to work at architectural scale, sit comfortably beside windows and roofing, cope with years of weather, and still look convincing as it ages.
That is why there is no single "best" cladding material. Timber may be exactly right for a contemporary extension surrounded by planting, while brick could make more sense when a new section needs to relate to existing masonry.
Stone brings weight and permanence, tile allows more freedom with colour and texture, and composite can suit homeowners who want a more consistent appearance with a different maintenance profile.
The useful question is not which material wins overall, but what each one does particularly well.
Wood cladding has something difficult to reproduce convincingly in another material: real grain, natural variation and the ability to soften architecture that might otherwise feel hard or overly new.
Species selection matters. Cedar and larch are familiar choices for exterior cladding, while modified timbers such as Accoya offer another route where dimensional stability and durability are priorities.

Homeowners also need to decide how they feel about weathering. Timber exposed to sunlight and rain does not retain its freshly installed colour indefinitely. Depending on species, orientation, exposure and finish, the surface can gradually move towards softer grey or silver tones.
That does not have to be considered deterioration. If natural ageing is part of the desired look, understanding how timber changes colour with weathering makes it possible to design for the mature appearance rather than being surprised by it later.
Best suited to: homes where natural texture, warmth and a material that develops character over time are priorities.

Tile becomes interesting when an exterior wall needs to do more than quietly enclose the building.
It can introduce colour, relief, geometry and craft at a scale that sits somewhere between conventional cladding and architectural surface design. This is particularly effective on garden elevations, entrance areas, courtyard walls, outdoor kitchens or selected facade sections that are viewed at close range.

Brick has an architectural familiarity that makes it particularly useful in residential work. It can help an extension relate to the original building, reinforce a regional material palette, or give a new structure a sense that it belongs on the site.
It also offers more design flexibility than the phrase "brick wall" suggests. Colour, bond, joint depth, mortar tone and brick format all affect the finished elevation.
The main design limitation is also one of brick's strengths. It has a very recognisable visual language. If the aim is something highly tactile, unusually coloured, sculptural or closer to the material expression usually seen in interiors, another surface may offer greater freedom.
Best suited to: traditional homes, extensions that need to relate to existing masonry, and projects where repetition and architectural rhythm are important.
Think about: matching or deliberately contrasting existing brick, mortar colour, detailing around openings and the relationship between the selected product and the underlying wall construction.
Stone gives an exterior a very different character from timber or tile. It feels substantial, and its natural variation can connect a building strongly to the landscape.
The choice ranges from relatively regular cut pieces to much more textured surfaces. That makes scale important. A stone that looks beautifully varied in a sample can become visually busy across an entire elevation, while a very uniform stone can lose some of the material character that made it appealing in the first place.
Weight and detailing also need consideration. Natural stone systems vary considerably, so the supporting construction, mechanical or adhesive fixing requirements, joints and water-management details should be designed for the particular product and building.
Best suited to: houses where permanence, natural variation and a strong connection to landscape are central to the design.
Think about: weight, support and fixing method, exposure, staining, joints, detailing and how much natural colour variation you actually want across the finished elevation.
Composite cladding is a broad category, so products should be compared individually rather than assumed to behave identically. Many residential systems use a combination of wood fibre and polymers, while other manufactured cladding products use quite different compositions.
The attraction is usually consistency. Boards can provide repeating dimensions, predictable colour and a timber-influenced appearance without behaving exactly like solid wood.
For some homeowners that is a benefit. For others, the grain variation, patina and gradual weathering of real timber are precisely what make an exterior appealing.
It is also worth resisting the phrase "maintenance free." Manufactured cladding still needs cleaning, and colour stability, expansion, fixing requirements, fire performance and warranty terms vary by product.
Best suited to: contemporary elevations where dimensional and colour consistency are more important than the changing character of natural timber.
Think about: product composition, thermal movement, stability, fixing system, fire classification, warranty and how convincingly the surface works at close range.
One of the easiest mistakes when comparing cladding is judging every option in its new condition.
Timber may silver as it weathers. Natural stone can develop patina and surface variation. Mortar and brick change subtly with exposure. Some tiled finishes are intentionally varied from the day they are installed. Composite is often chosen precisely because greater visual consistency is preferred.
None of those behaviours is automatically a disadvantage.
Ask what you want the house to look like in five or ten years, not only on completion day. A surface that develops visible character may suit a garden-focused home beautifully, while a tightly detailed contemporary elevation might benefit from greater uniformity.
The visible material is only one part of an exterior wall.
Depending on the construction, the complete build-up can involve structure, insulation, membranes, cavities, battens or support systems, fixings, flashings and the final finish. Water needs to be managed at roof edges, windows, doors, parapets and the base of the wall.
This is why measuring and setting out should happen early. Even something as straightforward as calculating the quantity of cladding required depends on understanding usable face coverage, profiles and the actual areas being covered rather than simply measuring gross wall width.
Fire safety and compliance also need to be considered as part of the complete external wall system. Requirements vary according to the building, its height, use, location and the proposed construction, so homeowners should check the current rules with their designer, building-control professional or other appropriately qualified adviser rather than assuming that a surface material is compliant in every situation.
Choose wood when warmth, natural grain and graceful weathering are central to the architecture.
Choose brick when context, familiarity and a strong repeating rhythm matter.
Choose stone when you want visual weight, permanence and a closer relationship with the landscape.
Choose tile when the exterior wall itself needs to carry colour, texture, pattern or a stronger design identity.
Choose composite when a more controlled appearance and consistent manufactured finish better suit the project.
There is also no rule that a house has to use only one. Timber over masonry, tile beside render, or stone concentrated around an entrance can all work well when each material has a clear purpose.
The important part is restraint.
A successful facade rarely comes from collecting as many finishes as possible. It comes from deciding what the architecture needs, understanding how each material will age, and resolving the construction behind it before making the final aesthetic choice.
